Workshop for College-bound High School Students
Target audience: high school students or recent high school graduates hoping to do well in college.
Purpose: to be introduced to, learn and try and discuss several essential academic reading strategies.
Description: TIME: 4 1/2 hours. CONTENT: 7 essential strategies taught and 4 more briefly introduced. MATERIALS: a handout, participants bring a challenging text of their own. METHOD: for each strategy: the problem the strategy solves, explanation, demonstration, coached practice on own texts, and debriefing discussion with Q&A.
Workshop for Training Mentors to work with College Students
Target audience: mentors who will teach key academic reading strategies to college students so they can improve their abilities to learn well from college texts.
Purpose: to give these mentors an overview and some practice with the few most essential academic reading strategies to prepare them to use the strategies themselves and then to share them with the students they will work with one-on-one.
